Genin Exam - Simple written test administered by an NPC conversation or even just and object interaction.

Chuunin Exam - Written test administered by Admins to try and uphold the authenticity to a degree.
Followed by a tactical test, comparable to the forest of death.

Finally a tournament, hosted by one admin, not to say that others cant watch.
The winner of the tournament and one other Genin are chosen to be Chuunin.

The "one other" should be chosen based on a display of great tactics in the forest or something like that.

that sounds quite good. by 'written' test how would you go along with that? other than the fact that its npc chatting and then with an admin?

You can interact with objects like NPCs.
The object can have a "conversation" by asking you questions and giving you choices to answer.

Check out a BYOND game made by a guy named Goditz, he was brilliant. It's Called Naruto:Birth of the Legendary Shinobi.
It was masterfully made but overan and BYOND's gaming engine was laggy and annoying.

I still play it every now and then because the game itself is beautifully made but BYOND doesn't give a chance to be perfect because it will run laggy on a super computer.

So the written part of the exams may be difficult but I think Oturan knows what I mean by a conversation with the object.
Any other input is welcome, I got off track talking about BYOND.

I saw it pretty much the same way. XD
Well... main difference between my view and yours is that I wanted more than two people to be able to become Chuunin... and I wanted it to be a weekly/monthly event... preferable weekly on Saturdays.

the only think is, if it was made as a by-weekly/monthly event, then it would have to be organised by your time, and the time of where ever else the people live.

It's not supposed to be simple and being a Chuunin is supposed to be rather tough. There are only like five normal ranks in the game so we don't need people advancing to quickly, they will get bored.

The Chuunin exams has been quite a discussion point for us in the team. Last I heard we were plannning to have the exam vary depending on which village it's held in which would really add some originality.

I didn't even think about making different types for the villages. That is very clever.

Thanks! We were also wondering on the time frame, every week might be too quick, each month might be to far apart, i was thinking every two weeks thats a fairly long time too when you think about it. Any ideas?

I think every 8 days is the best idea.
That way it changes which day it is every week so people who work or go to school can have the same chance. Some people only work weekends so having it every Saturday is a bad choice.

That's actually a pretty idea, though we still might have an issues with timezones and such, I might discuss this in more detail on the weekend. Thanks for the great idea!

As great as all of this sounds, It wouldn't work out as well as we all would like to believe.

You must take into consideration that many people will not want to be so patient, as to waiting 4+ days just to take a test so that they can proceed within the game.

Even if we wish to create an awesome naruto feel, sometimes it just isn't the right thing to do when it comes to an MMO, rather than a show, where the author creates the story line. These are real people, with very different personalities.

what i'm saying is, we should look out for the enjoyment of the game. Rather than the reality.

We should be catering to all. When some people don't have the time to just wait around for a test.

I propose the thought of having a genin test every hour. And a jounin every 3 hours.

Ninjamouse thats quite a good idea, but I rather like the fact that Ninja come from all the different lands and villages to particpate in the event. It adds varity and a chance to see some kick ass battles.

Yeah that's what i thought, i was thinking that once a player has fulfilled the requirements to participate in the Chunin exam (eg a certain level, number of missions etc) they'll recieve a message telling them which village the Chunin exams are being held in. It adds a lot more variety and will give players a chance to explore other villages and meet new people unlike if it was always in the same village.

Yeah exactly, maybe they could have a premliminary test against an NPC in their village first to see what its like though. And the battle is fought under the same conditions as the chuunin exam

Hmm, perhaps a proctor npc could be added to a spot in every village and if you do a mission for them it unlocks the option to practise in preparation for the Chunin exams but i'm not sure that would be needed.

You're a BYOND guy aren't you?

Genin every hour is too easy, every 3 days works.
Jounin test doesn't exist. They get promoted by Kage. We want people to play this for a long time not just get through the ranks in 2 days then PK til they get bored. THE END

No actually, I quit BYOND 2 years ago.

Now, more through thoughts, I have direct experience with this all too well.

People will NOT wait 3 days for a test.

I can assure you that.

Many people are impatient and would rather PK than wait for a test...

You must make sure the game appeals to all audiences.

In order to make a game last, it's not about holding out on the player. But rather making the game large enough and diverse enough, that the player will be able to do many tasks and complete several goals throughout his/her game career.

Maybe the game doesn't end when you reach Jounin or ANBU rank. Maybe it ends when you want to quit?

Maybe it's when you master every jutsu you can get your hands on?

There are many possibilities, however... holding out on the average player is not a good choice.

Ok, originally the chuunin were a moderator/admin run event. Event, meaning its not run by the engine, but by real people, to make the experience more real.

But with what your saying, it would require a test running nonstop through the game. Also it would be run by NPC's instead of real players. It might be a good idea, but i hope it doesnt lag the servers.

But theres one problem. What about when we get to the fighting portion of the exam. How could we have a whole tournament every hour?

Well maybe having a GM around or something to use a summon verb. Summoning all the participants? Or they talk to an NPC which places their names on a list and when the fighting portion of the exam is about to take place, each persons player ID is summoned to the required destination?
